JCB

Joseph Cyril Bamford. A man whose motto described his life. “Jamais content” or “never content” is a very good description of his company, JCB, as well. Always seeking to better and refine their products, this aspect of Joseph’s personality lives on strong in his company.

It all began in England in 1945 as Europe still smoldered from the battles of WW2. The need for tipping trailers, known also as dump trailers, had Joseph designing his first that year. With a very modest investment he built his creation which was quickly purchased. Within 3 short years there were 6 people at the company building hydraulic tipping trailers. As 1953 rolled around the Mk1 Excavator, the world’s first Backhoe Loader or Digger as it’s called in Europe, was introduced. Known also as simply a “JCB”, the company name is now used synonymously with this piece of equipment throughout many parts of the world.

As the company grew throughout the 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’s they added many new and unique machines and ways of doing things. The 520 telehandler, a material handler using a single arm telescopic boom and offset operator cab, was added to their product line in 1977. Always looking for improvements in safety and a better way of doing things (remember that “never content” motto of Mr. Bamford’s) JCB adopted the single boom technology to their first line of Skid Steer Loaders (SSL’s). The unique 150,165,165HF “Robot” Skid Steer Loaders were launched in 1993 and introduced into the US market in 1995.

Because of their design of having 2 lift arms, conventional SSL’s have a forward facing door for entry and exit. This requires the operator to climb over any attachments to enter the cab. A single boom offered the ability to design side access into the operator cab. This removes the danger of crawling over various types of attachments and allows for entry much like a normal car. This was a big change in how these types of machines were built. The cab was moved off-center slightly towards the left and a single “power-boom” as JCB calls it, is mounted on the right. Another plus to this layout is visibility. Without a pair of lifting arms on either side on the operators cab there is only the boom on the right. It’s said that visibility is increased by up to 60%. The single boom also allowed JCB to increase cabin size in its skid steer loaders and compact track loaders over the more cramped conventional machines the other manufacturers offered.

As skid steer loaders in general have matured so has JCB’s rendition of them. Now, roomy cabs, air conditioning, heat, pressurized cabins, eco-friendly engines and ergonomically designed electronic controls are making these machines into comfortable, hard-working mobile offices. The company manufactures their JCB loaders so well, that an agreement with Volvo was made in 2010 for JCB to produce their line of skid steer loaders and compact track loaders too.

As we all know, even the best offices have break downs. It won’t be the copier or fax but should the tandem drive pump on your 185 fail or your 1110T HF need a new track, we are ready to get you up and running again. A hydraulic filter and outer air filter for your 160 or 180T? We’ve got you covered. Our inventory and product offerings of JCB parts grows daily. With the knowledge and willingness to get you what you need, it’s our mission to get your JCB loader back on its feet and doing what it needs to do…..take care of business and get the job done.
